MBBS in the US: Top Colleges, Fees, Eligibility, Scholarships, and Career Opportunities

In India, MBBS is a bachelor’s degree, but in the United States, it is a master’s degree program. In the USA, MBBS is the same as an MD (Doctor of Medicine), and it takes 4 to 5 years to finish at a medical college.

After getting an MD, a student must apply for a residency program that lasts between 3 and 5 years before they can work as a doctor. So, the total time it takes to get an MBBS in the United States is between 7 and 9 years.

To apply for this MBBS, international students must have taken a pre-medical course (BS degree) at a university in the United States. When applying to medical schools in the US that offer MD degrees, international students must also take the MCAT. The cost of an MD’s MBBS tuition in the US ranges from 18,000 to 65,000 USD (13.68 to 49.43 lakh INR).

Students can work as doctors and surgeons in certain fields after getting their MBBS from a university in the USA. Healthcare jobs make more money than any other job in the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the United States says that jobs in health care will grow by 15% between 2019 and 2029, creating about 2.4 million new jobs.

How MBBS is taught in the US

Since a medical degree is considered a second degree in the United States, students must have a Bachelor of Science (BS) in biology, chemistry, or a related field before they can apply for an MD. This Bachelor of Science degree is also called a pre-medical course. After getting their MD, students have to apply to a residency program in the field they want to work in.

Before Medical School

This is a basic course that teaches students about the basics of medical science. Students from the United States start this course after 10th grade, and it takes them 4 years to finish. But because Indian students apply to MBBS programs in the US after 10+2, they only have 16 months to get a BS degree.

If someone already has a Bachelor’s degree in medicine from the United States or has studied MBBS for one or two years in India, they might not have to take a pre-med course in the United States. But this is up to the university you are applying to.

Some of the things that are taught in pre-medical courses are English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Anatomy, Medical Terminology, and Sociology.

MD Program

After you finish the pre-med course, you can join an MD program that is the same as an MBBS program in the US. The program has two parts, and each one takes 2 years to finish.

Theoretical Stage

This is where students learn about medical science at a more advanced theoretical level. You can study Anatomy, Physiology, Histology, Medical Ethics, Biochemistry, Neuroanatomy, Pathology, Microbiology, and Clinical Science in the United States.

For the second stage of this MD degree, students must pass the USMLE 1 (the United States Medical Licensing Examination).

Practical Stage

This is also called an externship, clerkship, or clinical rotation. Doctors and professors teach the basics of how to work in a hospital and how to treat patients. At the end of this step, you must apply for USMLE 2.

Residency Program

Students who have passed the USMLE 2 can apply for the residency program. Depending on the specialization chosen, this program can take anywhere from 3 to 5 years to finish.

Students must work in hospitals and learn as much as they can about their fields. The last test you have to take is the USMLE 3, which is also called the Licensee Exam. If you pass this test, you can work as a doctor in the United States or any other country that recognizes the US education system.
