David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

UCLA Geffen Scholarship – One of the most rewarding as well as difficult and expensive careers are in the field of medical science. It is also a very lengthy process. On average it can take from 10 to 14 years to complete your medical education which would include a four-year-long undergrad degree (in the medical-related field), then a four-year MD program from a medical school, and finally you have to complete your residency which can take from three to seven years depending on the specialization you have picked.

Therefore, it is very rewarding and beneficial for students to be able to secure a scholarship to fund their studies. What is the UCLA Geffen Scholarship? Well, it is a prestigious scholarship award for a brilliant and outstanding student entering the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. It is a merit-based, highly competitive scholarship that funds a student’s four-year school fees and gives out a living stipend to cover other expenses like housing, health insurance, transportation, food, books, etc.

Who is eligible and how do I apply for the scholarship? Every candidate that has applied to the medical school is eligible for the scholarship. The scholarship is awarded on merit and is not a need-based scholarship. There is no need to submit a separate application to be considered for the scholarship. Students are automatically considered for the award at the time of admission. According to recent numbers, about 25% of the current UCLA medical students are benefiting from the scholarship. Moreover, it is also open for international students, but not to transfer students.

Apart from the Geffen Scholarship, the university has other merit-based scholarships that students can benefit from like the UCLA Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship funds a full tuition fee for the four-year as well as provides a $5,000 research stipend along with other benefits.

Since the merit-based scholarships are highly competitive and do not consider financial need, therefore, according to their website the university offers more than 100 need-based scholarships through donors and philanthropists that a student can apply to. The award varies and is based on students’ needs. To apply for these scholarships a student needs to fill out a Financial Aid Application form.
